the Homo Sapiens Agenda is just a small step toward more visibility and therefore, equality. Readers can see themselves or their friends in the characters in the book, characters who are handling the situation or learning how to. This book is like a unicorn, with how rare LGBTQ+ stories like these can be. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a big deal as far as representation in the media. Compared to previous years, LGBTQ+ characters are becoming more common in media, but there is still a long way to go before the community is represented fairly. So why is this visibility important? You may be thinking, there are already gay story lines out there, why does this book make a difference? Sure, there are specifically gay characters in literature, but how many of those aren’t main characters in their own story? How many of those characters even get a happy ending or are treated well? So many LGBTQ+ characters are still stereotyped heavily or made tragic characters, despite the growing acceptance and tolerance we’ve seen over time. This book follows the legalization of gay marriage in the United States, almost like a celebration of visibility. From kids who are coming out themselves, to kids who have friends who are in that situation, to kids who have never interacted with the community, this book is important of the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a story that needs to be out there.
